How We Helped a 14-Week Pregnant Patient with Persistent Headaches and Neck Pain

A 29-year-old first-time mother visited Renew Chiropractic at 14 weeks pregnant after experiencing persistent headaches and neck pain.

The discomfort was mainly centred around the base of her neck and upper back, often leading to headaches throughout the day. She had already tried stretching, mobility exercises and rest, but her symptoms continued to return. Unlike typical muscle soreness, the pain did not improve overnight, and she frequently woke up with the same neck stiffness and headaches the following morning.

What was she experiencing?

Her main concerns included:

  • Persistent headaches throughout the day
  • Neck pain at the base of the neck
  • Upper back tightness and discomfort
  • Morning neck stiffness upon waking
  • Symptoms that did not improve with stretching or rest

Our Asessment

A comprehensive assessment was performed to evaluate how her cervical spine, upper back and surrounding muscles were functioning. We also considered the physical changes associated with pregnancy to identify possible contributors to her headaches and neck pain.

Based on the assessment findings, a personalised pregnancy-safe treatment plan was recommended.

Our Treatment Approach

Her care was tailored according to her stage of pregnancy, symptoms and assessment findings.

Treatment focused on reducing tension around the neck and upper back, improving joint mobility and helping her move more comfortably while using techniques appropriate for pregnancy.

Depending on the individual’s needs, care may include gentle chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy, joint mobilisation and personalised advice on posture and daily activities.

Progress after 1 visit

After just one treatment session, she reported approximately 50% improvement in both her headache intensity and neck pain.

She also found daily activities more comfortable and was able to move with significantly less discomfort.

Individual results may vary. Every patient is assessed individually, and the recommended treatment approach depends on their symptoms, clinical findings and stage of pregnancy.

Why Can Pregnancy Cause Headaches and Neck Pain?

During pregnancy, changes in posture, ligament laxity, muscle tension and the body’s centre of gravity can place additional strain on the neck, shoulders and upper back. These changes may contribute to neck discomfort and tension-type headaches in some women.

A proper assessment can help determine whether these symptoms are related to musculoskeletal changes and identify the most appropriate management approach.
